2018 Friend of Pharmacy: Dr. Chandra Thomas

Calgary, Alberta

The Friend of Pharmacy Award is presented to a non-pharmacist/non-pharmacy technician who has contributed significantly to the success of the profession of pharmacy. Our 2018 recipient is Dr. Chandra Thomas, a nephrologist with Alberta Health Services and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Calgary’s Department of Medicine.

Chandra’s pharmacist colleagues will tell you that whenever Chandra has an idea for improving the care of patients, she ensures all stakeholders are engaged. One example of this is when she reached out to both the Alberta Pharmacists’ Association and Alberta College of Pharmacy to connect the Southern Alberta Renal Program (SARP) with community pharmacists. She also advocated for the addition of a community pharmacist representative on SARP’s Medication Safety Committee.

“Chandra identifies the importance of the pharmacy team in all aspects of patient care,” said Jenny Wichart, Clinical Practice Leader, Alberta Health Services. “She ensures pharmacy team involvement in decisions while working to optimize their full-scope role in the program.” Jenny was one of the pharmacists who nominated Chandra for the award.

Chandra believes that collaboration among health professionals is critical to patient care. “Collaboration with pharmacists is integral to what we do,” said Chandra. “I don't think there's a group of patients where their drug therapy is more complicated. We can't do it alone. We really rely on the expertise of pharmacists who know about kidney disease.”
