The Future of Pharmacy Award is awarded to up to three pharmacists per year who have been in practice less than five years and who exhibit strong leadership skills, the initiative to become a role model, and offer extraordinary promise to the profession.

To his core, this year’s recipient Joshua Torrance is committed to patient care. As a clinical pharmacist on the Unit 33 and Stroke Prevention Clinic teams at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, what makes Joshua stand out is his dedication to his patients. He makes a point of visiting his patients daily at their bedside and has pursued learning physical examination skills in order to monitor the effects of drug therapy wherever possible.

“When a patient comes to see me, I think they can expect to be listened to. I fully and truly believe that they should be the primary decision-maker in their health,” said Joshua. “I see my job is really to help them through their healthcare journey and to give them the skills and tools they need to achieve their health goals.”

Josh has taken initiative to create several types of databases for pharmacists’ use in the inpatient unit and as well as the outpatient clinic. These databases have helped streamline the pharmacist’s assessment process and have allowed the team to be more efficient as clinicians.

“What makes Josh stand out is his innovation," said Joshua’s nominator and colleague, Steven Freriks. "He's constantly striving to reach new heights to provide the best care that he possibly can for patients.”
