The Friend of Pharmacy Award is presented to a non-pharmacist/non-pharmacy technician who has contributed significantly to the success of the profession of pharmacy.
This year’s recipient is Dr. Rahim Kachra, a specialist physician in General Internal Medicine with Alberta Health Services, Clinical Assistant Professor and Internal Medicine Clerkship Director Undergraduate Medical Education at the University of Calgary. As a friend of pharmacy, Dr. Kachra goes above and beyond to push the profession of pharmacy. He was an early adopter of pharmacist prescribing, continuously advocates for his team, and recommends team members to teaching opportunities. He spends time with not only pharmacists, but also students and residents to help them understand how patient presentations may relate to drug related problems.
“He advocates regularly on behalf of our Medical Teaching Unit pharmacy team to management to ensure our skill set is recognized,” said Ashten Langevin, Clinical Pharmacist, who co-nominated Dr. Kachra for the award. “His enthusiasm with supporting our role and augmenting our knowledge are only minor pieces of his contribution to the profession of pharmacy.”
Interprofessional collaboration is crucial to Dr. Kachra in providing patient care. “When I think about the burden of polypharmacy, the complexities of medication interactions, and the complexities of our patients in general and their presentations, the opportunity to work with a specialist in that area is extremely important for patient care and it definitely makes me feel better and more confident in the care that we’re providing,” said Dr. Kachra.
