The M. J. Huston Pharmacist of Distinction is awarded to a pharmacist who has demonstrated leadership and advanced the pharmacist profession through a long-time commitment to innovation, continual professional development, and quality patient care.
This year’s M.J. Huston Pharmacist of Distinction is Dr. Tammy Bungard, Director of the Anticoagulation Management Service (AMS) within Alberta Health Services. Dr. Bungard started this service in 2001 as the first pharmacist run anticoagulation clinic in Canada. She had collaborative agreements with physicians to order lab tests and prescribe anticoagulation therapy for ongoing patient management, all before pharmacists had this advanced scope of practice. In addition to being an effective and sustainable service, her pioneering work with the AMS served as a model to support pharmacist prescribing in Alberta.
Dr. Bungard has made numerous contributions to the profession through research, mentorship, and advocacy. As an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and lecturer for the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Alberta, she also inspires the next generation of clinicians.
“Looking back, I get the most satisfaction from my career when I reflect on how much we’ve transformed clinical practice for pharmacists in Alberta. I feel like over the past 15-20 years, there has been a distinct paradigm shift in our practice,” said Dr. Bungard.
“Her advancement of the pharmacy landscape in Alberta is unrivaled, as she as so clearly demonstrated over the course of her career a vast impact on a multitude of facets of pharmacy practice,” said Jay Mutch and Lydia Cheung, pharmacist colleagues who nominated Dr. Bungard for the award. “She serves as a model of inspiration for all Alberta pharmacists.”
