2019 Pfizer Consumer Healthcare Bowl of Hygeia: Tristan Lai

Tristan Lai
Pharmacy Manager
Rexall Pharmacy Group

The Pfizer Consumer Healthcare Bowl of Hygeia is awarded annually to a pharmacist who has compiled an outstanding record of community service. This award has tremendous history. It has been presented in all ten Canadian provinces since 1967.

This year’s recipient, Tristan Lai, is a pharmacist and pharmacy manager. Tristan is a board member of the Edmonton Men’s Health Collective, an organization that provides a voice for GBTQ men in addressing their health determinants and needs through various initiatives. Some of Tristan’s involvements include advocacy work for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and HIV Edmonton, developing an opioid awareness project, and delivering harm reduction training.

Tristan’s dedication to community service is further exemplified by him completing training for HIV PrEP prescribers, even though pharmacists are not designated prescribers for publicly funded PrEP. He uses this knowledge to engage with other pharmacists through presentations and discussions, as well as supporting the pharmacist’s role in improving accessibility to PrEP.

“What gives me the most satisfaction in the work that I do is hearing very positive feedback from the folks we try to reach via our programming, as well as the services we offer in the organization,” said Tristan. “Being able to listen to great feedback has been very rewarding, it’s probably the most important work I’ve ever done.”
