The W.L. Boddy Pharmacy Team Award is awarded to a healthcare team (pharmacy staff team or multidisciplinary team that includes one or more pharmacists) who, by virtue of their collaboration skills and use of the pharmacist’s full scope of practice, positively impact the health of individuals in their community.

This year’s recipient is the multidisciplinary team at the Comprehensive Children’s Epilepsy Centre (CCEC) at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. This team consists of neurologists, epileptologists, nurses, a pharmacist, and other professionals. The CCEC aims to provide the most comprehensive care to children with epilepsy and seizures in Alberta. In order to do this, they have conducted research for improving patient outcomes and provided education to stakeholders for optimizing resources. They have also created a medication dosing handbook, clinical therapy pathways, and documentation templates.

“Compassion, accountability, respect, excellence and safety are all factors that influence the direction of growth and improvement of the CCEC,” said pharmacist Humirah Sultani, who co-nominated the CCEC for the award. “Their dedication to patient centered care and interprofessional collaboration elevates their team to an upper echelon of health care delivery in the twenty first century.”

“It is an extreme privilege for not only me, but the rest of our multidisciplinary team to be able to work with the kids and the families that we do,” said Curtis Claassen, the team’s pharmacist. “We believe in family centered care. They’re going through a very difficult time and to be able to play a role in helping them through that time is extremely valuable for all of us.”
