2020 W.L. Boddy Pharmacy Team Award: Mint Health + Drugs, Franklin Station

Mint Health + Drugs, Franklin Station

The W.L. Boddy Pharmacy Team Award is awarded to a healthcare team (pharmacy staff team or multidisciplinary team that includes one or more pharmacists) who, by virtue of their collaboration skills and use of the pharmacist’s full scope of practice, positively impact the health of individuals in their community.

This year’s recipient is the pharmacy team at Mint Health + Drugs, Franklin Station. This pharmacy is located in the Alex Community Health Centre, a community hub offering clinical and social care to Calgary’s most vulnerable. While being a community pharmacy, the Franklin Station team has been provided with full access to The Alex’s EMR and open access to the clinicians and administrators. As a result, the team has been able to strategically participate and advance many of the Alex’s programs. The team has established themselves as clinicians in important areas such as chronic disease management, liver health, smoking cessation, minor ailments, and vaccinations. The team has worked to improve medication management and medication safety protocols across many of the Alex’s programs, provided expertise in establishment of new, innovative, and progressive treatment pathways, including HIV PREP, opioid agonist therapy and naloxone training, Mifegymiso, and hormone therapies for the Alex’s transgender patients. The team has worked with the Alex’s clinicians and allied health to find coverage options and alternative therapies as needed.

“This pharmacy blends the intricacies of pharmacy, clinical care, specialty medicine, and works all those elements in a complex care setting with Calgary’s most vulnerable,” said Jackie Liu, Director of Clinical Operations at the Alex, who co-nominated the team for the award. “This model shows what true integrated team care can be, and we would be proud to show it off to the pharmacy world at large,” he adds.

“The pharmacy team at Mint has become a vital member of our multidisciplinary team, resulting in improved clinical practice and, most importantly, improved patient outcomes,” said Dr. Pawel Niemczewski, physician at the Alex, and co-nominator for the award.
