Can provisional pharmacists and pharmacy students administer drugs by injection?

October 21, 2025
The answer is yes, but important conditions must be met.

As the 2025-26 fall immunization season is underway, this is a reminder that a provisional pharmacist or a pharmacy student may administer drugs by injection as long as they meet the following important conditions:

  • The provisional pharmacist must have completed training that demonstrates at least one of the following:
  • The pharmacy student must have successfully completed an injection training program as part of their CCAPP-accredited Canadian pharmacy program curriculum.
  • The provisional pharmacist or pharmacy student must have current and valid CPR certification (level C or HCP).
    • Their certificate must be level C or HCP. Level B will not be accepted.
    • They must attend an in-person or blended course. Courses delivered solely online are not acceptable.
    • The course must be offered, and taken, in Canada. Examples of accepted courses include St. John’s, Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation (Healthcare and Basic Life Support), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • The provisional pharmacist or pharmacy student must have current and valid First Aid certification.
    • They must attend an in-person or blended course. Courses delivered solely online are not acceptable.
    • The course must be offered, and taken, in Canada.
    • Standard or Emergency First Aid is acceptable.
  • The provisional pharmacist or pharmacy student must be directly supervised by a pharmacist registered on the clinical pharmacist register who has authorization to administer drugs by injection.

Proof of training

Provisional pharmacists and pharmacy students please note that you do not need to submit proof of injection training, CPR certification, or First Aid certification to ACP to administer drugs by injection while under direct supervision. Proof of completion of these courses should be provided to your supervising pharmacist. You will need to submit proof of completion of these courses to ACP once you are on the clinical pharmacist register and applying for your authorization to administer drugs by injection.
