In the fall of 2018, ACP and the Alberta Pharmacists’ Association (RxA) partnered to offer a panel presentation exploring issues related to substance use and harm reduction. The program gave pharmacists a better understanding of stigma and harm reduction, and helped them develop strategies to build and maintain professional relationships with patients requiring harm reduction measures.
The session has been broken down into three recordings (shown below) that are now available as online courses on the RxA website.
Patients First: A Practical Approach to Implementing Opioid Assessment into Practice – Part 1: A Patient’s Story
When dispensing opioid medications, pharmacists must be prepared to deal with the possibility of the development of a substance use disorder, overdose, and diversion. In this session, you will hear a woman describe a patient’s story and explain how health care professionals can better help patients who are prescribed opioids.
Patients First: A Practical Approach to Reducing Stigma and Applying Harm Reduction I – Collaboration
This program aims to help pharmacists learn about collaboration strategies to assist in the building and maintenance of professional relationships with patients requiring harm reduction measures and how to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
Join Essi Salokangas and Dr. Laura Evans as they discuss important aspects of harm reduction and the necessity for collaboration amongst health care professionals when providing opioid agonist therapy.
Patients First: A Practical Approach to Reducing Stigma and Applying Harm Reduction II – Ethics and Communication
This program aims to help pharmacists understand the ethical implications of harm reduction, as well as how to apply the principles of relationship-centred care. You will learn how to apply these principles to clinical interactions with patients who use drugs.
All courses are available to non-RxA members and are eligible for CEUs.
