Are you prepared to administer injections to children under five?

Training and documentation must be approved by ACP.

Pharmacists with authorization to administer drugs by injection—are you prepared to administer drugs by injection to children between two and four years of age?

Now that the new Standards of Practice for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians are in effect, pharmacists with authorization to administer drugs by injection may provide this service to children between two and four years of age after completing the following steps:

  1. Successfully complete a Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy (CCCEP) accredited program or a program at a Canadian university that provides training specifically for administering injections to children under five years of age.
    • Refer to The Link for additional information about training requirements.
  2. Submit evidence of this training to ACP by completing the “injections for children under five years old” form in myACP. Your evidence of training may be subject to audit.
  3. Receive confirmation from ACP that you may proceed with administering injections to children under five years of age.

A pharmacy student or provisional pharmacist who has completed the training requirements for the administration of injections and has valid and current CPR and first aid certifications may administer drugs by injection to children between two and four years of age only if they have also completed the above training requirements and inject under direct supervision of a pharmacist who has completed the steps outlined above.

ACP continues to work with Alberta Health to make publicly funded vaccines for this age group available in community pharmacies. Alberta pharmacists play a critical role in public health programs through the administration of vaccines to Albertans.
