ACP Council has approved updates to Providing naloxone for personal use as an unscheduled drug – Guidelines for pharmacy teams.
This document defines expectations for pharmacy teams when naloxone is provided to an individual in the pharmacy requesting naloxone for personal use. The guidelines focus on an approach that avoids stigmatizing individuals requesting naloxone, and encourage pharmacists to identify at-risk individuals in their practice who could potentially benefit from having naloxone on hand.
Selling naloxone to workplaces is a separate process that does not require pharmacy teams to adhere to these guidelines. More information on naloxone sales to workplaces can be found on the ACP website here and in Alberta Blue Cross Benefact 1083.
