Patients with this condition must be referred to the Alberta Tuberculosis Program.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has reported to ACP that, recently, they have come across patients who were dispensed medications from community pharmacies for the treatment of a tuberculosis (TB) infection. AHS reminds pharmacy teams that any patient who presents with TB must be referred to the Alberta Tuberculosis Program.

This provincial program offers complete services to prevent and control TB in Alberta.

The program provides services for the following referral types:

  • active TB suspected/TB treatment;
  • contact investigation and follow up;
  • immigration screening;
  • latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening and treatment; and
  • other screening including transplant, immunosuppressed, LTC, employment, and corrections.

Pharmacy teams should consult the Alberta Referral Directory on the program website (link above) for service referral information.
