The new generation of ACP’s standards of practice are available now!

August 27, 2024
The approved Standards of Practice for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians and Standards for the Operation of Licensed Pharmacies take effect February 1, 2025.

In June, Council approved ACP’s new Standards of Practice for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians (SPPPT) and Standards for the Operation of Licensed Pharmacies (SOLP). The approval followed more than two years of research, development, and consultation with regulated members, interested parties, and members of the public. The standards were written with person-centred care at the core, focusing less on transactional care and more on the health needs of individuals and the ongoing patient care process.

You can now find the new SPPPT and SOLP on the standards webpage.

What’s next?

Regulated members can prepare to implement the new standards by taking the following steps:

  • Review: Ensure you carefully review the new standards and familiarize yourself with the SPPPT and SOLP. These documents should be read and understood in connection with each other.
  • Read:
    • The next two issues of Full Scale (in the fall and winter) will take a deeper dive into the standards and will help you address the college’s expectations once the new standards come into effect.
  • Attend: In September, the college will host a series of ACP Connect events focusing on the SPPPT, followed by another series of events in the spring of 2025 focusing on the SOLP. Regulated members received an email with links to register for the fall events on August 21, 2024.
  • Discuss: After reviewing the new standards, have conversations with your colleagues, review your pharmacy’s policies and procedures and ensure that they are brought up to date to support compliance with the new standards.
  • Implement: Create a plan to make any necessary changes to your practice and your practice site.

We look forward to working collaboratively with all regulated members to collectively prepare to implement the new SPPPT and SOLP. Please note that the current standards remain in force until January 31, 2025, and both new sets of standards will take effect on February 1, 2025 (except as otherwise noted).
