The following message is from the National Institute on Ageing:
Respiratory infections remain among the leading causes of emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and death in later life. In 2023 alone, more than 13,000 older Canadians lost their lives to COVID-19, influenza, and pneumonia. The greatest tragedy is that many of these severe outcomes are preventable through timely vaccination.
To support healthy and independent ageing this winter, the National Institute on Ageing (NIA) has released new provincial and territorial vaccine one-pagers for adults aged 65 and older. These guides were developed for individuals and organizations to easily download, print, and share with older adults and those who support older adults. To ensure accessibility, these resources are available in both English and French and will become available over the coming weeks in additional languages commonly spoken by older adults in these jurisdictions.
The one-page resource outlines
- national vaccine recommendations,
- which vaccines are publicly covered in Alberta, and
- where people can go to get their questions answered on vaccines.
You can download the Alberta vaccine one-pagers in English and French.
For pharmacy teams planning to share this resource with patients, please note that public coverage and eligibility for vaccines are determined by Primary and Preventative Health Services (formerly Alberta Health) and may differ from national recommendations.
