2021-22 Influenza Immunization Program about to begin

October 13, 2021
ACP has resources to help pharmacy teams prepare.

The 2021-22 Alberta Influenza Immunization Program begins for the general public on October 18, 2021.

The Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) has updated our Seasonal influenza information webpage to assist pharmacy teams with information and resources to prepare them for the influenza season. The webpage includes information about

  • Alberta Health’s Influenza Immunization Policy,
  • administration of vaccine,
  • the Alberta Health Services Influenza Immunization Program,
  • reporting requirements including adverse reactions after immunization, and
  • vaccine storage and handling.

A reminder that pharmacists with authorization to administer drugs by injection may provide influenza vaccinations to individuals five years of age and older.

This influenza immunization season comes at a time when many Albertans are seeking COVID-19 booster shots or their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Please note that influenza vaccines supplied through the Alberta Influenza Immunization Program and COVID-19 vaccines can be administered at the same time. Spacing of 14 days is only required between administration of the COVID-19 vaccine and LIVE vaccines such as Flumist®. Review of the patient’s immunization record is required prior to the administration of either the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.
