Alberta Influenza Immunization Program begins October 19, 2020

September 30, 2020
The start date applies to all providers participating in the program.

The Alberta Influenza Immunization Program’s universal start date is October 19, 2020. That’s when pharmacists can begin administering influenza vaccine to individuals five years of age and older.

To help navigate through all the information available on influenza immunization season, including the Alberta Influenza Immunization Policy, the Alberta Immunization Regulation, reporting requirements, and more, visit ACP’s Seasonal Influenza Information webpage. Alberta Blue Cross Benefact #867 and Benefact #890 provide information about the program, including vaccine ordering, public awareness, advertising immunizations, official start date, and COVID-19 considerations.

Pharmacists commonly have questions about conducting off-site influenza clinics. Information on requirements and restrictions are found on the ACP Seasonal influenza information webpage, and in Appendix 1 of the Alberta Influenza Immunization Policy.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for influenza immunizations this season is expected to be at an all-time high. Ensuring the safety of patients and staff will be of paramount importance and practising physical distancing may present a challenge, especially with the possibility of line-ups forming at pharmacies. With this in mind, refer to ACP’s Guidance for administering injections to patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another resource pharmacists can use is the Health Canada Guidance for influenza vaccine delivery in the presence of COVID-19. This guidance includes information on the challenges posed by COVID-19, screen and entry, physical distancing, infection prevention and control, and other considerations.
