Health Canada addresses generic Diclectin concerns

November 8, 2017

Health Canada has responded to a concern raised by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada about the approval of a generic version of Diclectin (doxylamine – pyridoxine) for the treatment of nausea during pregnancy. The society’s concern is that the generic drug contains the artificial sweetener mannitol.

In a Recalls and Safety Alerts Information Update, Health Canada stated that it “would like to reassure Canadians that, based on its evaluation of the evidence available to date, consumption of small quantities of sugar substitutes, including mannitol, during pregnancy does not pose a health risk.”

Health Canada adds that the amount of mannitol found in doxylamine – pyridoxine is less than what occurs naturally in 100-gram servings of foods such as cauliflower, mushrooms, snow peas, and peaches.
