Meeting provincial immunization targets AND the standards

September 23, 2014

Understanding that pharmacists may plan flu clinics at locations outside of licensed pharmacies, we remind you that you must always comply with the following standards regarding:

  • Confidentiality (Code of Ethics-Principle 4)
  • Safe Administration (Standard 17 – Standards for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians )
  • Integrity and Safety of Drugs (Cold Chain Management) (Standards 5.1-5.5 of Standards for Operating Licensed Pharmacies)
  • Records (Standard 18 – Standards for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians and Standard 8.1 – Standards for The Operation of Licensed Pharmacies)

NOTE: Community pharmacists cannot bill Alberta Blue Cross for administration of publicly-funded influenza vaccine administered in the workplace. Compensation for workplace influenza immunization services using publicly funded vaccine is the responsibility of the employer who contracts with the community pharmacist to provide the service. Pharmacists cannot bill Alberta Blue Cross at any time for the administration of influenza vaccine administered in the workplace.
