Ordering laboratory tests: when and which ones?

September 23, 2014

Ordering laboratory tests is not a restricted activity in Alberta. However, Standard 3.7 requires that pharmacists only order laboratory tests:

  • That the pharmacist is personally competent to order and interpret; and
  • That are indicated to assist in the management of drug therapy for a patient.

Should other laboratory testing be required, pharmacists should collaborate with other health professionals on the patient’s team to facilitate ordering of them.
