Reminder: up-to-date CPR and first aid a must for injections

October 21, 2014

Standard 1.18 of the Standards of Practice for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians states:

A pharmacist must maintain current certificates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid, at a level determined by Council, if the pharmacist has been authorized to administer drugs by injection.

Authorized pharmacists must hold Level C or higher CPR and either standard or emergency first aid certification.

As part of the 2014-15 permit renewal process, pharmacists who held authorization to administer drugs by injection were required to sign a professional declaration stating that they had and would maintain valid CPR and First Aid certification. Signing a false declaration and/or administering injections while not holding up-to-date CPR and First Aid certification are grounds for discipline.
