My name is Kathie Tam; I am a fourth year pharmacy student at the University of Alberta. As a requirement of my elective course PHARM 498, I have chosen to conduct a survey on the attitudes toward Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) among pharmacists in Alberta.
This survey is important as it has been reported that up to two-thirds of Chinese immigrants in Alberta used CAM in conjugation with western medicine. Especially, since Chinese has been considered the largest visible minority in Canada and that Chinese immigrants remain one of the top three ethnic groups immigrated to Alberta, CAM is an indispensable aspect for healthcare provider in Alberta and Canada to consider when interacting with patients. The survey outcomes will enable the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to assess the necessity to incorporate this component to the current pharmacy curriculum.
