Improved access to methadone for analgesia

May 15, 2019
Physicians no longer require approval to prescribe methadone for chronic pain or palliative conditions.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) is no longer requiring physicians to obtain approval to prescribe methadone for analgesia (chronic pain or palliative conditions). CPSA made the exemption to make methadone more accessible for patients with these conditions.

Approval is still required for physicians when prescribing methadone to treat opioid use disorder (OUD).

When prescribing methadone for analgesia or OUD, physicians must use a TPP Alberta prescription pad.

For more information, visit the CPSA website.

If you have any questions or concerns about a prescriber of methadone, please contact CPSA.
