ACP has recently received concerns about pharmacists not practising proper hand hygiene when administering injections. In particular, patients have observed pharmacists not changing gloves, not washing their hands, or not using an alcohol-based hand rub between injections.
As a regulated health professional, it’s important to be mindful of patient perceptions around hand hygiene and the risk of exposure and transmission when providing or receiving an injection. Make sure patients are aware that you’re taking the proper steps to protect their safety as well as your own when administering an injection. This is something you can communicate to patients both verbally and through your actions.
