Canada Health Infoway has confirmed that PrescribeIT, which integrates electronic medical records and pharmacy management systems to allow prescribers to create and securely send prescriptions electronically to the pharmacy of the patient’s choice, will cease operations as of May 29, 2026.
What this means for Alberta pharmacy teams
PrescribeIT transmission for TPP Type 1 prescriptions
TPP Alberta has confirmed that the current exemption allowing electronic transmission of TPP Type 1 monitored medications via PrescribeIT will end when PrescribeIT ceases operations on May 29, 2026.
Effective May 30, 2026, pharmacy teams should expect that TPP Type 1 prescriptions must again be issued on physical TPP secure prescription pads, unless another approved exemption applies at the location or program where the prescriber practises. A list of facilities and programs that qualify for exemption can be found on the TPP website.
Pharmacy teams may wish to remind prescribers who rely heavily on PrescribeIT to order new TPP pads ahead of time through the TPP Alberta website.
For more information, visit the TPP Alberta website.
Non-TPP medications
For prescriptions not subject to TPP Type 1 requirements, clinic and vendor workflows may vary once PrescribeIT is discontinued. However, the conclusion of PrescribeIT does not change the legal requirements for issuing or transmitting prescriptions. These prescriptions may continue to be transmitted using any method permitted under ACP’s Advice to the Professions on transmission of prescriptions.
