Teach and learn all at once when you precept

August 27, 2013

All the textbooks in the world can never fully prepare anyone for that first encounter with a worried, ill patient. At the same time, there is no better way to solidify your own knowledge and reignite your enthusiasm than showing someone new the ropes. This makes precepting a win-win proposition!

While caring for their patients, a pharmacist preceptor teaches, coaches and supports students, thereby helping them turn theory into practice. If you have been in practice for at least six months, provide direct patient care, and have a desire to help shape the future of the profession, precepting could be a great fit for you. See the faculty’s Experiential Education page for site and preceptor criteria.

Preceptors receive a lot of support too. There are workshops and a new preceptor guide to help you and your student get the most from the experience. Faculty staff are also great resources.

Preceptors are needed for three different student placement periods. To sign up, or learn more, contact either Renette Bertholet (community pharmacy setting) or Joe Tabler (institutional pharmacy setting). Their contact info is at
