New Advice to the Professions highlights how evidence‑informed practice supports safe, person‑centred care.

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians evaluate evidence every day as they make care decisions collaboratively with their patients. Evidence‑informed practice provides a comprehensive framework for using current, reliable evidence alongside clinical expertise and patient values to support person‑centred care. Within this framework, critical appraisal of evidence is a foundational skill that helps verify trustworthiness, value, and applicability in the context of a patient’s unique situation.

ACP has created a new Advice to the Professions that outlines what you need to know, including how

  • to assess the quality, credibility, and relevance of information before relying on it;
  • clinical evidence and professional judgement must be applied alongside patient preferences, goals, and lived experience to support person-centred care and shared decision making; and
  • using reliable sources, sound judgement, and clear communication supports safe practice and aligns with the standards of practice and the Code of Ethics.

To further support pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in understanding and implementing these skills, ACP will introduce prescribed learning activities focusing on evidence‑informed practice for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the 2026–27 Continuing Competence Program cycle.
