Technician regulation official July 1

May 31, 2011

What a centennial present! The announcement at the college’s AGM that regulatory amendments to regulate pharmacy technicians would officially come to Alberta on July 1, 2011 was the icing on the Centennial Conference cake.

This is very exciting news, but please keep in mind it doesn’t come into effect until July 1. Even then, only regulated pharmacy technicians (i.e., individuals who have met all the requirements and are officially registered on ACP’s pharmacy technician register) may practise under indirect supervision.

For details and answers to frequently asked questions, review the special notice ACP sent on May 27.

Transition reminders:

After July 1, 2011, the title of “pharmacy technicians” is restricted to individuals registered as pharmacy technicians with ACP.

A pharmacist must still assess EVERY prescription and every patient to ensure treatment is appropriate for the patient and must counsel all patients to support them in pursuing their health goals.
