On April 1, 2019, the Health Professions Act was amended to protect patients from sexual abuse and sexual misconduct from health professionals. As required, ACP has developed Standards of Practice for Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct.
The standards prohibit sexual relationships between regulated members and patients. The standards also include explanations of specific exceptions describing when it may be appropriate for a regulated member to have a sexual relationship with a patient and the criteria that must be met before entering into a sexual relationship with a former patient.
