Each year, the Office of MD Admissions at the University of Calgary’s (U of C) Cumming School of Medicine seeks volunteers to assist with its file review process. This provides an opportunity for interested parties to assess the applications of their future peers and collaborators.
The U of C invites pharmacy professionals from central and southern Alberta to participate in the file review process by applying for its File Review Sub-Committee. File reviewers are responsible for the review and scoring of applicant files that determine who will be invited to interview for medical school. The committee consists of between 60 and 80 people of diverse backgrounds, including faculty members, residents, students, allied healthcare professionals, and community members.
Many choose to include this opportunity as volunteer experience and professional development. Prior and current volunteers speak fondly of this experience, adding that it was indispensable to their development as community members and professionals alike.
The university requires that all participants attend a training session, available remotely or in-person at the U of C campus. In-person sessions take place throughout October. The file review process takes place online from early November to mid-January.
