Reminder: Pharmacies’ role in preventing COVID-19 infection spread

March 9, 2022
ACP recommends continuous masking along with other prevention measures as appropriate.

On March 1, 2022, Alberta eased many COVID-19 public health measures. Notably, this shift included the lifting of provincial mask mandates in most settings. Masking continues to be required in some scenarios, including in AHS-operated and contracted facilities and municipalities with local bylaws that supersede the end of the provincial mandate.

Masking requirements will differ for pharmacies across the province. It is important that pharmacy teams continue to use professional judgement and take appropriate steps to prevent the spread of infection. ACP continues to recommend continuous masking for those performing direct patient care and for those who are not able to maintain adequate physical distancing.

Regulated members are also reminded of ACP’s COVID-19 Guidance for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians, which has been updated to align with current provincial health measures. The section on personal protective equipment (PPE) for direct patient care encourages pharmacy team members to adhere to infection prevention and control measures (IPAC), including continuous masking wherever possible.

As communities continue to navigate the complex and evolving COVID-19 pandemic, ACP encourages pharmacy teams to lead by example and use professional judgement to implement effective prevention measures.
