Greg Eberhart has provided Council president Patrick Zachar notice of his intention to retire as registrar of ACP effective December 31, 2024.
Greg has been the registrar for ACP (previously the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association) since 1990. Under his leadership, ACP has been at the forefront of innovation in pharmacy practice globally, including pharmacists gaining the ability to prescribe medications and administer injections, both of which were achieved in 2007. Since then, Greg has led efforts to shift the focus of pharmacy teams beyond assessing prescriptions and dispensing medications to providing person-centred care and becoming trusted and valued members of Albertans’ healthcare teams.
“When I first accepted this responsibility, I never envisioned it lasting this long,” said Greg. “However, I have been inspired by the continuous opportunity to learn, to affect change, and to pursue an environment where pharmacy professionals truly put individuals in their care first, and consistently take responsibility for the appropriateness and responsible use of their drug therapy. I have been fortunate to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people—together, I believe we have made a difference. I take pride in the successes that we have achieved, knowing that in an ever-changing world there remains much more to be accomplished.”
Council has appointed a succession planning committee to lead the search for a new registrar. A search firm will be contracted before mid-February. Under the stewardship of the succession planning committee, the firm will conduct a national search. It is Council’s goal to announce a registrar-elect in mid July 2024.
As part of the transition to a new registrar, Greg will work with the president to on-board and orient the registrar-elect. Throughout the fall, responsibilities will increasingly transition to the registrar-elect until Greg’s retirement on December 31, 2024.
