This September, ACP welcomed 492 regulated members to the fall 2024 ACP Connect sessions in Lethbridge, Calgary, Edmonton, and online. Together, we reviewed the new Standards of Practice for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians (SPPPT), explored key changes, and discussed how pharmacy teams can prepare for implementation ahead of the standards coming into effect on February 1, 2025.
A few key takeaways from the sessions include
- The importance of the new structure of the standards and the use of outcome-based standards. The outcome standards, which describe the expected patient outcome that must be achieved for the standard to be met, provide flexibility by creating a common objective for pharmacy care. They also provide an opportunity for regulated members and patients to work together to achieve those outcomes through a person-centred approach.
- The role of regulated members in reflecting on their practices and considering how the new standards will be applied in the context of your own practice and what that will mean for patients.
- The reminder to proactively prepare for the launch of the new standards over the next few months to ensure your pharmacy team is prepared on February 1, 2025. This is a good opportunity to examine your practice and consider what training may be required, how your policies and procedures need to be updated, and how your pharmacy team can be prepared for implementation.
The presentation slides are available here.
ACP extends our thanks to everyone who was able to join us for these important conversations and we look forward to gathering again for the next ACP Connect sessions in the spring of 2025, when we will review the new Standards for the Operation of Licensed Pharmacies.
