Top marks awarded to a committed pharmacy technician

September 7, 2022
Olivia Haller is the 2022 Pharmacy Technician Achievement Award recipient.

Olivia Haller has worked behind the pharmacy counter since high school. “My first job in high school was as a pharmacy assistant and cashier in a smalltown pharmacy in Trochu, where I grew up,” said Olivia.

After graduating from high school and spending a year abroad, Olivia realized she wanted to pursue a long-term career in pharmacy. “I realized this was the field that I was passionate about and that I wanted to grow and build a career,” said Olivia.

From there, Olivia moved to Calgary to pursue her pharmacy technician diploma at Robertson College. Not only did Olivia achieve her goal and obtain her diploma; she achieved the highest marks across the province on the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada’s Qualifying Exam. That distinction earned her ACP’s 2022 Pharmacy Technician Achievement Award, which includes a prize of $1,000.

Olivia said the collaborative and supportive environment at school helped her succeed. “It was a huge advantage to work together and really get to know my classmates and instructors,” said Olivia.

Now that she is registered and practising as a pharmacy technician, Olivia remains committed to continual learning. “I was just certified to fit people for compression stockings,” she said. “I’m always looking for other educational opportunities that will help me in my role.”

Reflecting on her new role, Olivia says she values her scope of practice as a pharmacy technician. “Now that I have my practice permit, it is so rewarding to be able to take extra steps to help our patients,” said Olivia. “I love having a wide variety of skills.”

Looking towards the future, Olivia hopes to see opportunities for teaching and leadership. She shared her advice for those starting out in pharmacy. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” said Olivia. “Be bold and share your thoughts.”
