Alberta Blue Cross has provided an end-of-season summary for pharmacy teams.

The 2023-24 Alberta Influenza Immunization Program ended on Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Over the course of the 2023-24 influenza season, over 1.13 million Albertans were immunized with an overall influenza immunization rate of 25 per cent. Pharmacists administered 78 per cent of these immunizations, immunizing approximately 878,695 Albertans.

Pharmacy teams are reminded that children five to nine years of age who are eligible for a second dose of influenza vaccine can receive it until April 30, 2024. Alberta Blue Cross will accept claims until April 30, 2024, for this age group.

All provincially funded influenza vaccine must be removed from cold chain storage for appropriate destruction (as per Alberta College of Pharmacy’s Standards for the Operation of Licensed Pharmacies Standard 5.13) on May 1, 2024.
