Closing the reporting gap

June 30, 2026
Timely reporting of prescription forgeries makes a difference.

Read time: 2 minutes

There has been a continued trend of increased forgery attempts across the province in the first half of 2026.

Particularly in Edmonton, there have been a high number of forgeries reported. Over the last six months, ACP has received over 40 forgery reports from Edmonton pharmacy teams. While it continues to be a concerning trend, the efforts of pharmacy teams to report attempted and successful forgeries to ACP is appreciated. These reports help identify trends, promote awareness, and prevent future forgeries from being successful.

As a reminder, it is also important to report these attempted or successful forgeries to law enforcement. While ACP received over 40 reports for the Edmonton area from January to June, Edmonton Police Services (EPS) received only 15 reports.

This discrepancy suggests that many attempted or successful forgeries are not being reported to law enforcement, which reduces the opportunity for investigation and intervention.

EPS has emphasized the importance of prompt reporting of all suspected prescription forgeries. Delays in reporting can significantly reduce the likelihood of identifying suspects, tracking patterns, and preventing further incidents.

For attempted or successful forgeries, pharmacy teams are reminded to report the incident to

  • ACP using the online forgery reporting form,
  • local law enforcement using their non-emergency/general phone line,
  • the prescriber to ensure they are aware that their credentials may be connected to fraudulent prescriptions, and
  • Health Canada if the incident involves a forged prescription for a controlled substance that has been filled and drugs have been dispensed.

By maintaining strong reporting practices and collaborating with law enforcement, pharmacy professionals help to maintain the integrity of the drug system. The ongoing efforts of pharmacy teams to identify, prevent, and report prescription forgeries protects patients and supports community safety.
