Interprovincial transfer of prescriptions for controlled substances now authorized

November 24, 2021
The Health Canada exemption to s56(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, FAQs, and ACP guidelines have been updated.

As ACP reported in our October 13, 2021, Link article, Health Canada has extended the exemption for controlled substances made pursuant to section 56(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

In November 2021, Health Canada amended the exemption and the accompanying frequently asked questions (FAQ) document to enable to the transfer of controlled substances between provinces and territories.

Additionally, there are no limitations on the number of times that controlled substances, including targeted substances, may be transferred in this way.

Guideline #10 of ACP’s new guidelines for regulated members has been updated to reflect this change.
