For the past year, Council has been engaged in the development of a new strategic plan that lays the foundation for ACP’s work over the next three years.
“The mandate of a regulator is clear: to set standards, monitor practice, and protect the public interest,” said ACP Registrar and CEO Brad Willsey. “Patient safety and quality care have always been—and will always remain—ACP’s North Star. However, the world in which we live has fundamentally shifted, and more than ever, we recognize that our approach to regulation must be deeply informed by the reality of health care in Alberta today.”
Much of the work leading to the development of the 2026-28 Strategic Plan has been to listen. ACP wanted to understand the experiences—including successes and challenges—of those who provide pharmacy care and those who receive it. We heard from 1,000 Albertans and 900 regulated members, and we conducted a focus group of members of the public.
Based on the feedback from regulated members and the public, we determined our strategic path forward. ACP’s three-year plan for 2026-28 will guide the college’s decision-making, help us set priorities, and drive the efficient use of our resources.
Our three strategic goals are
- Elevate pharmacy’s role within Alberta’s healthcare system.
- Enable quality care in pharmacy practice.
- Anticipate and support the future of pharmacy practice.
Each goal is supported by strategic objectives and initiatives that will be carried out during the next three years, with specific measures of success for each. The plan was built with quality and safety as our guiding principles. Our vision for the future is a modern, future-ready pharmacy sector where pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are fully integrated into Alberta’s healthcare system and enabled to consistently deliver person-centred care.
“To achieve this plan, we will be engaging further with regulated members and the public to ensure that we understand the experiences, challenges, and expectations of each group,” said incoming Council President Murtaza Hassanali. “Then, we will do what we can to improve those experiences, address those challenges, and meet those expectations as consistently as possible. I’m excited for the future.”
In the spring, we introduced our 2026-28 Strategic Plan to regulated members at ACP Connect events in Edmonton and Calgary. If you were unable to attend in person or online, you can view the Edmonton session now on our YouTube channel.
