Council establishes ACP’s strategic priorities for 2023

November 30, 2022
Work towards achieving the goals in ACP’s Strategic Plan continues.

In 2021, ACP Council established its five-year strategic plan, which includes five goals:

  1. All applicants are ready to practise pharmacy in Alberta’s health system.
  2. There is a modern and relevant framework to regulate pharmacy practice.
  3. Licensees are qualified and held responsible for practice in their pharmacy.
  4. Data intelligence is used by registrants and the college to make more informed decisions.
  5. Registrants identified as not being able to meet practice expectations demonstrate practice improvement.

In implementing the plan, ACP’s core programs will be enhanced to provide assurance that pharmacy professionals are prepared for success in Alberta’s health system, creating more consistent patient experiences and expectations.

As the ACP team works towards achieving the goals listed above, Council approves a list of priorities to focus our efforts on each year, with each priority linked to a specific strategic goal. Here are the college’s priorities for 2023.

Modern and relevant practice framework

  • Approve and implement new standards of practice.
  • Review legislation in context with emerging practices and health system needs, and develop policies to support recommended legislative changes.

Data intelligence

  • Launch a new information management system which will enable registrants and licensees to self-manage their registration and licensing requirements, support more effective business processes within ACP’s core programs, and better enable ACP to analyze and use data to make more informed decisions.
  • Complete an environmental scan and develop a plan for an Alberta medication incident reporting system.
  • Draft a governance, performance, and analytics framework for ACP.

Meeting practice expectations

  • Redesign the Structured Practical Training (SPT) programs for provisional pharmacy technicians and pharmacists, including assessment frameworks, program evaluation, and rules to govern the programs.
  • Launch the licensee competency framework and use this to revise the Licensee Education Program (LEP).
  • Develop tools to assess licensee competencies to provide assurance that licensees can meet their responsibilities.
  • Enhance the Continuing Competence Program (CCP) to support practice improvement.
