Non-sterile compounding

The Standards for Pharmacy Compounding of Non-Sterile Preparations and the Guidance Document for Pharmacy Compounding of Non-Sterile Preparations were approved by ACP Council in 2018 and are in effect as of July 1, 2021.

All licensed pharmacies must provide patients access to compounding services. Pharmacies may meet their obligation to provide access to compounding services

  • by performing compounding directly in the pharmacy in accordance with compounding standards, or
  • through an agreement with a pharmacy located in Alberta that holds a compounding and repackaging licence.

Pharmacies that provide compounding services on site may also enter into an agreement with a compounding and repackaging pharmacy. For more information about compounding and repackaging agreements, visit the Licensee resources page.

If you are planning on opening a new pharmacy, please refer to our getting started document and compounding essentials to ensure that you meet the standards prior to the pre-opening inspection.
