Recently, the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) issued a news release about an individual who had allegedly been presenting himself as a physician and providing health services to patients in the Edmonton area. The individual had practised as a physician in Alberta in the past, but has not held a practice permit from CPSA since 2015.
Among the services the individual was allegedly providing was administering injections of prescription drugs. It has been suggested the individual may have procured the drugs from a community pharmacy, although this has not yet been confirmed.
This story serves as a good example of why pharmacy teams must confirm that, before selling Schedule 1 drugs for “office use,” pharmacy team members must first confirm that the healthcare provider is authorized to possess these drugs.
