The Jurisprudence Learning Module (JLM) is an online module that reviews the different federal and provincial legislation and standards of practice that govern Alberta pharmacy practice.
The module includes nine chapters, which can be completed in any order, and takes approximately 10 hours to complete. Once all chapters are completed, you will receive a certificate.
The module consists of information, case studies, and activities, providing an overview for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians of all legislation that pertains to practice in Alberta.
You must complete the module prior to writing the Ethics and Jurisprudence Exam and beginning the Structured Practical Training (SPT) Program.
| Chapter 1 | Pharmacy Practice in Alberta |
| Chapter 2 | Patient Care |
| Chapter 3 | Professional Services |
| Chapter 4 | Drug Schedules |
| Chapter 5 | Prescriptions |
| Chapter 6 | Product Distribution |
| Chapter 7 | Pharmacy Operations |
| Chapter 8 | Professional and Ethical Responsibilities |
| Chapter 9 | Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct |
The module chapters can be completed in any order. Individual chapter completion can be verified by opening the right-hand navigation panel in Academy and ensuring each chapter’s bubble is green.
Once all chapters have been completed, there will be a green banner at the top of the screen indicating completion and containing a link to “Click here to print your certificate.” Please save the certificate for your records; you will be required to submit it to ACP with your application to the clinical pharmacist or pharmacy technician register. Your certificate of completion does not expire and can be accessed in Academy at any time.
If you are registered with ACP as a pharmacist, pharmacy technician, provisional pharmacist, provisional pharmacy technician, or pharmacy student, you will automatically have access to the JLM in Academy through myACP.
If you are a pharmacy technician student, a reinstating pharmacist or reinstating pharmacy technician, or wish to access the JLM for other reasons, you may fill out an Academy access form in myACP under “New applications.”
If you cannot access your certificate of completion, expand the right-hand navigation panel in Academy, and confirm that all nine green bubbles have been filled in. Skipped slides or interactivities within chapters will be indicated by an empty bubble.
Candidates are not permitted to access the SPT Program until they have their JLM certificate of completion in Academy.
Yes, you will need to complete this course. Chapter 9 will link you to the Alberta Federation of Regulated Health Professions Protecting Patients from Sexual Abuse and Misconduct course, which includes three modules and will take you approximately 2.5 hours to complete. This course is a part of the JLM and you will need to check off a declaration at the end of Chapter 9 of the JLM attesting to your completion.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties, try the following troubleshooting tactics:
Within the chapters, at times, the “Next” button may be “greyed out.” In order to advance to the next slide, the slide’s content or interactivity must be completed. This may include clicking a “Submit” button, clicking a checkbox, or waiting for the audio accompaniment to finish, before being able to advance to the next slide.
If you already completed the previous JLM, and have retained your certificate of completion, you do not need to complete it again. If you have not retained your certificate of completion from the old JLM and need to provide proof of completion for an application process, you must complete the new JLM.
