ACP’s new standards of practice are now in effect

February 4, 2025
Regulated members must implement the new Standards of Practice for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians and Standards for the Operation of Licensed Pharmacies.

ACP’s new Standards of Practice for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians (SPPPT) and Standards for the Operation of Licensed Pharmacies (SOLP) came into effect on February 1, 2025.

The new standards are crafted with person-centred care at the core, focusing on the health needs of individuals and the patient-care process. There are a number of changes to the SPPPT and the SOLP that will affect pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, and licensees.

What do you need to do?

All regulated members are now required to practise to the new standards. The following actions are important steps towards ensuring that you are informed, prepared, and compliant with the new standards now that they are in effect.

Read

Ensure you carefully read the new standards and familiarize yourself with the SPPPT and SOLP. These documents should be read and understood in connection with each other and in context with the overall practice framework.

Prior to viewing the new standards on the ACP website, make sure to clear your browser cache to ensure you are seeing the current version of the documents.

Review

There are extensive resources to support regulated members in understanding and adhering to the new standards published on the ACP website. Please see the resources below for additional information:

  • Watch the livestream of ACP Connect – Fall 2024 where we met with regulated members to discuss the SPPPT and answer questions about the new standards.
  • Review the New standards Q&A, which addresses a number of questions about the new SPPPT and SOLP.
  • Learn about the new structure and guiding principles that shaped the new standards.
  • Read about some of the key changes that will impact regulated members, including changes to consent requirements, options for pharmacists to administer injections to children ages 2-4, and new supervision requirements.

Discuss

Have conversations with your team and colleagues and ensure everyone shares an understanding of how their practice will be impacted, then address any outstanding questions and concerns about how to implement the standards.

Implement

Work with your pharmacy team to create a plan to make any necessary changes to your practice and your practice site and update your pharmacy’s policies and procedures to support adherence with the new standards.

We look forward to working collaboratively with all regulated members to effectively implement the new SPPPT and SOLP.
